My Dominican Republic Challenge:- Defeating My Fear of the Ocean & RIP to my GO PRO

Ocean view Challenge

The Deep Blue…always a fear of mine which is ironic as I love the power of the ocean, especially the bright turquoise blue paradise of the Caribbean. But Relentless Challenge is all about pushing the boundaries and facing my fears – this was one I’ve been timing right for 3 years.

I’m no longer afraid of the ocean but the bad news was my Go Pro was ripped off my head during boarding (more below) so all video footage was lost 😦 Thankfully some photos were taken and attached below but losing the footage was a big downer.

Sailing – Learning to sail in strong winds and strong currents was nothing short of exhilarating and taxing on the forearms with constant gripping of the sail versus the strong winds. Great instructor and switching for and against the tide brought crazy action from myself acting like a monkey to keep the boat going the right direction. Here is a pic after the adventure:

Sailing Challenge

So one down 2 challenges to go.

Kayaking: This was just great and also something i can continue to do back home in London. This was delayed for a few days as the ocean was just to rough. Once ready it was bliss…very hard on the arms but you take the beauty of the ocean and beach in as you are not fighting with a sail and wind. Did feel like capsizing a couple of times but the yellow kayak was a good friend. Kayaking the River Thames is next. Here is a shot after this challenge:

Kayak Challenge

And finally the pinnacle of challenges. Reg Flags blustering above our heads…thumbs up to go in with a Boogie Board (aka Body Board). This was me entering the Ocean’s domain…it called the shots here and respect is what it demanded. Once taught how to get the slingshot effect, it was all about catching the big wave.Ladies cut their experience short as the waves were getting stronger and ripping bikini’s off – I was too focused on not being sucked away to admire anything like that!! SO towards the end of this ultra amazing challenge, my fearless some say reckless attitude finally got smacked down into shape my the ocean. A huge swell came over and i got the best slingshot, however the wave had an extra whip and roared over me pulling my Go Pro off my head. I went spinning and lost my board and as i tried to grab into the water for my Go Pro…it was long gone with the strong under current. This dampened the adrenaline as sailing, kayaking and boarding footage washed away in the Caribbean sea. Got a Pic below but does not capture the crazy challenge that this was or the large waves encountered.

Boogie Boarding Challenge

That Go Pro went everywhere with me…from the Arctic to London to the Caribbean. Insured so i will buy the latest version but a weird bond was broken with that tiny camera…reminiscent of Wilson from Cast Away….ok maybe I’m going OTT now.

More Challenges come rolling in from this month onwards…including more with water!!!

Take care and CARPE DIEM
